  • Valtteri Bottas won the race after starting on pole
  • Max Verstappen completed the podium in third

Hamilton also paid tribute to his father’s influence on his career.

“It’s overwhelming if I’m honest. It was a tough race today and yesterday was a difficult day for us – Valtteri did a great job so congratulations to him,” he told Sky Sports.

“I didn’t know if it would be possible but I worked as hard as I could here with my team back at the factory.

“My mum, dad, step-mum and step-dad and my family are here and it’s an honour to be here [with six]with those greats.

“My dad told me when I was like six or seven never to give up and that’s kind of the family motto. I pushed as hard as I could I was hopeful I could win today but I didn’t have it in the tyres.”

What emotional Lewis Hamilton said on team radio after becoming F1 champion for sixth time

“Still we rise, still we rise,” Hamilton says on the radio.

“What an incredible weekend. Thank you so much guys for today, and to everyone who came out.

“I can’t believe it. I really can’t believe it.”

Hamilton is reduced to tears after winning the F1 titie.

He will be slightly frustrated he didn’t mark it with a win today, but regardless, it’s been an epic season.

Bottas overtakes Hamilton!

He’s already put 1.7 seconds between him and his team-mate.

That will have annoyed Hamilton, but he knows he’s on course to win.

Dramatic end in Austin.

Hamilton brushes off Bottas who tries to overtake him.

He’s just 0.3 seconds ahead of his Mercedes team mate now.

Lap 52, not long to go.

Verstappen is only four seconds behind.

He’s 1.7 seconds behind his Mercedes team mate Hamilton.

Hamilton will be looking in his wing mirrors.

This could go to the wire.

Surely that’s that for Hamilton. He can taste it.

It would take something seriously unlucky for him to blow it from hre.

Leclerc is in the pits too.

It looks as if that’s where he’ll finish given that the big three have pulled away.

Hamilton still not overly happy

Hamilton not best pleased with his tyres.

Informs his team of his dissatisfaction.

Luckily for him it’s not going to mean too much.

He’s currently 4.4 seconds clear of Bottas.

“Uhmmm, left front doesn’t want to turn in anymore.”

Engineer: “Understood.”

“Lewis we’re going to the end with 32 laps remaining, this will be close with Verstappen at the end of the race.”

Hamilton: ”Do I have a chance to win?”

“It’s 16 sec to Verstappen 21 to Valtteri, we may need to make a stop.

“This is critical that we make the one stop work Lewis, you managed 24 laps on that medium tyre.”

Hamilton: “Give me a target Bono, work with me, man.”

Bottas was desperate to go on the hunt for Hamilton.

“Ok you can attack him now.”

He leads the way now following Hamilton’s pit stop.

1st – Hamilton

2nd – Bottas +2.8

3rd – Verstappen +9.1

4th – Ricciardo +35.1

5th – Hulkenberg +49.2

6th – Leclerc +53.0

Hamilton comes in, three laps behind Bottas.

Bottas has just completed his fastest lap.

Hamilton happy with his tyres.

Claims they endured a dip but are now back firing.

Lewis Hamilton is gaining ground on Max Verstappen.

“You have to tell me if he’s in the DRS zone.”

That’s the cry from the Dutchman to his team.

Now he heads into a pit stop.

Nightmare for Vettel!

This does not look good for Sebastian Vettel.

It looks like a suspension issue as he hit a bump in the track.

“I don’t know what happened there,” he tells his team.

Yellow flag comes out.

Vettel tells his team: “I must have damage I don’t know where from i didn’t touch anything but I have understeer like crazy.”

Ferrari claim they can see the understeer, they’ll be watching it closely over the course of the next few laps.

Hamilton is up to third, jumping ahead of both Ferrari drives. A great start

Alton and Carlos Sainz made contact with each other.

Bottas starts well and leads the way.

Hamilton calm despite qualifying nightmare

Lewis Hamilton has taken full responsibility for his worst qualifying result of the year but says it does not faze him.

“I don’t look at this race as a particularly important race – it’s as important as any other race to me,” insisted Hamilton.

“So it’s not a standout individual important race for me, there’s still two more after this.

“Naturally I approach it exactly the same, not looking to pull out miracles tomorrow.

“Things happen for a reason and today is a lesson learnt and I will try to see if I can turn a negative into a positive, for sure.”

Hamilton’s father Anthony raring to go

Anthony Hamilton, Lewis’ father has explained just how far his son has come on the road to this point.

“Nothing has changed. Standing here on the grid today, it feels like the first time in 2007 when we had the opportunity to win a world championship,” he told BBC Radio 5Live.

“I’m as nervous as hell, but I’m enjoying it, I’m happy to be here and I think it is very, very surreal – here we are, sixth world championship on the brink, it’s absolutely amazing.

“Not bad for for a boy from a Stevenage council house.”
