THE CHASE host Bradley Walsh was left speechless on this evening’s edition of the ITV quiz show as despite accumulating a significant sum in their cash builder round, the contestant decided to make a shock U-turn.

Bradley Walsh, 59, was joined by a brand new bunch of contestants today for the last episode of The Chase this year, with the foursome hoping to defeat Chaser Shaun Wallace. One of the contestants shocked everyone in the ITV studio however when they decided to take a low offer for a very unusual reason.

Kicking off the game this afternoon was player Sophie, who managed to get the jackpot rolling by getting back to the bench with a sum of £5,000.

Next up was medical professional Alex, who seemed to be a worthy competitor for the Chaser when he showed just how knowledgeable he was.

The contestant accumulated £7,000 but before he took on Shaun, The Dark Destroyer offered him a higher value of £30,000 and a lower sum of just £1,000.

After some advice from his team mates to either stick with his total or go higher, the player made the decision to go against them and accept the lower offer.

The contestant told the host: “Do you know what Bradley? You only live once,” to which he believed the player was going to take the higher sum.

Instead, Alex continued: “I’m going to go for the one grand,” which left the presenter utterly speechless.

“Really?” he asked, just to double check the contestant wasn’t joking, to which the medical professional replied: “I’m here to beat the Chaser, I’m not here for the money.

“I’m not going to beat the Chaser if I’m not back there,” he continued, as Bradley struggled to hide his reaction.

“I want to give myself the best chance of getting back there,” Alex commented, with the presenter telling him his team mates were eyeing up grater things to do with cash.

“I’ll be happy with a chair,” the contestant affirmed.

After defeating Shaun, the Chaser said: “Whilst Alex could have taken the £30,000, what I respect is it’s not about the money for him.

“It’s a good ideal to have.”

Taking to Twitter, fans weren’t too pleased with Alex for his shock U-turn, despite the Chaser commending him.

One viewer posted: “Just take the 30k! Why do people not go for the higher offers?! #TheChase.”

Another added: “What the f***? As if he earned 7k and went low #TheChase,” as a third commented: “NEVER. TAKE. THE. MINUS. OFFER. #TheChase.”

A fourth asked: “Right so if you get £7,000 on the cash builder on the chase but then take £1,000 because it’s “not about the money”, I automatically hope you get caught. Looking at you, Alex #TheChase.”

Noticing the presenter’s reaction to the shock decision, a fifth shared: “Brad trying to hide his reaction to Alex’s decision #TheChase.”

Although there was uproar over the acceptance of a low offer, it seemed the contestant was right to make it back for the final chase as he answered the majority of the questions.

After accumulating 19 steps between their jackpot and the Chaser, the team were hoping they’d done enough to defeat Shaun.

In the final round, their efforts paid off as they managed to win the £20,000 cash prize and see off the The Dark Destroyer.

What the f***?
