STRICTLY COME DANCING’s head judge, Shirley Ballas, has opened up about the real reason Viscountess Emma Weymouth and Aljaz Skorjanec were evicted from the show over Mike Bushell and Katya Jones on Sunday.
Strictly Come Dancing fans saw Viscountess Emma Weymouth, 33, and her pro partner Aljaz Skorjanec, 29, be the next couple to be eliminated from the show on Sunday, and head judge, Shirley Ballas, 59, had a few words to say about it.
In her column with HELLO! Magazine, Shirley said she was “thankful” that she didn’t have to make the decision between voting for Emma and Aljaz or Mike Bushell and Katya Jones, as all three judges voted the same way.
Shirley appeared on this weekend’s Strictly after having surgery to remove her breast implants that could have proved cancerous.
Ignoring doctors orders, the dancer was back in her judging seat on the panel at the weekend.
She said: “I thought she and Mike were at a similar level but his Charleston was a bit exciting than Emma’s Samba.”
She explained her reasoning: “In the dance-off, Mike raised his game and was so calm. Katya missed a step and wasn’t in the right place to go on his back and she was extremely upset, but it was amazing how Mike saved it.”
“He did a quick shuffle to get her onto his back and carried on like a true professional – you’ve got to give brownie points for that.”
“Overall, though, Emma Weymouth was absolutely marvellous and Aljaz took this non-dancer a long way.”
The year’s Strictly fans have been left a little salty after BBC Breakfast presenter, Mike, has managed to wriggle his way out of three dance-offs, some even going as far as saying the BBC competition this year was “fixed”.
“Absolutely b***** horrified, who on earth would vote for Bushell when Emma was the best? Fixed fixed fixed fixed fixed fixed fixed,” one user fumed.
Another stated: “Safe to say Emma is gone then. Anyone in the dance off who is against Mike has no chance of staying.”
A third commented: “Poor Emma the judges are definitely going to save Mike and Katya. Shirley doesn’t like this Emma either! The show is supposed to be about dancing not favourites!”
Shirley came under fire after Halloween week when her vote ultimately saved Mike and Katya who were once again in the dance-off, which sent Catherine Tyldesley and Johannes Radebe home.
At the 2019 Pride of Britain Awards on 28 October last week, the judge was quick to shut down any questions surrounding the controversy.
Speaking to Digital Spy she said: “I’ve been preparing for my surgery in the morning so I haven’t been going online too much, but I have one question for you.
“Why was she in the bottom two? Who put her there – because it wasn’t us, she wasn’t the lowest scoring of the judges – so why was she there?”
Shirley was adamant that the judge’s votes were complient with what they saw on the dance floor: “You cannot complain if someone is in the bottom two.
“I have to choose someone with my technical 50 years’ experience to go through, and I do not expect the people sitting at home to understand even why I put them through.”
In her HELLO! Magazine column, Shirley also left a tribute to paralympian Will Bayley, who as forced to quit the show last week after a knee injury.
She said she would “never forget” his contemporary dance and “the message that sent.”
“It was lovely to see him sitting in the front row supporting his Strictly family on Saturday.
“I know he must have been hurting inside because he just loves to dance but he’s got friends for life there, we all love him and appreciate everything he and Janette brought to the show.
Another couple down, eight to go – who will be leaving next week?
