BRITISH MPs will soon be electing the next Speaker of the House of Commons. So who are the candidates currently in the running to replace John Bercow?

John Bercow has been Speaker of the House of Commons for a decade, having been elected in 2009. Mr Bercow announced he would be standing down on the original Brexit deadline of October 31, or in the case of an early general election being called. Mr Bercow oversaw his last session of Prime Minister’s Questions as Speaker last week on Wednesday.

When will John Bercow be replaced as Speaker?

MPs will be voting today on John Bercow’s successor as Speaker.

At 2.30pm, the candidates who have put themselves forward will give a short speech in the House of Commons.

MPs will then have 20 minutes to vote in a secret ballot.

It will then take approximately an hour for the votes to be counted.

A candidate must receive more than half of the votes to be elected.

If no one passes this threshold on the first round, the candidate with the least votes will be dropped out of the race.

Anyone who receives less than five percent of the vote will also be removed from the running.

Candidates will also be given the option to withdraw after each round.

Only when one candidate receives more than half of the votes will voting stop, and a new Speaker will be elected.

Who will replace John Bercow as Speaker?

Seven candidates for the role have been announced ahead of today’s vote.

The seven candidates are:

Chris Bryant

Chris Bryant is Labour MP for Rhondda and former shadow deputy Commons leader.
