Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal ‘lucky’ claim made by Alex de Minaur

Alex de Minaur feels lucky to have had the chance to face Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal this year.

Alex de Minaur has achieved his career-high ranking of No 18 and is attempting to win the Next Gen Finals this week.

The 20-year-old Australian heads into the season finale as one of the favourites for the title.

Clashes against Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, at the Australian Open and Swiss Indoors, have placed him in good stead heading into 2020.

“I was lucky to face Federer and Nadal this year,” De Minaur said.

“We prepare for it. Every match is a battle.

“It’s been an unbelievable year and not one that I expected. I’m very happy with what I’ve been able to accomplish.

“I’m just happy to be here in Milan. I had a blast last year, so I’m looking forward to coming out here and competing again.”

De Minaur lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas in last year’s Next Gen Finals final.

He added: ”Finishing runner-up last season was a bit of a bittersweet ending.

“I wasn’t able to get it done in the final, but it was a great end to a very positive year.

“I was able to bring that momentum to make sure I had a very positive pre-season and did all the right things.

“Every match is completely different.

“There have been lots to learn from, but now I’m here in Milan and have to get ready for the match tomorrow.

“I’ve just been taking it day by day this year.”

De Minaur beat Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in his opening match.

He will take on Miomir Kecmanovic in the second rubber before finishing the group stages against Casper Ruud.
