That is all from us on what is a disappointing day for Nadal. Fingers crossed he can be fit for the ATP Finals, which begin next Sunday.

Nadal’s withdrawal means he is a doubt for the ATP Finals and the race for the year-end No 1 will go to the season-ending tournament.

More from Nadal: “Sad to be in this situation. This happens. Everything was good, my hand was better.

“Hopefully things will be better. I hope to be ready for London. That’s the biggest goal now.

“But as I say before, I can’t guarantee anything because just happened today.”

Nadal has been talking to the media. Quotes to follow…

It is understood Nadal sustained an abdominal injury this morning.

More from Smith:We went over a little earlier and watched some of his practise, not all of it, in the tented area that is next to the stadium.

“There didn’t seem to be a problem but we weren’t there for the whole of his practise.

“The only thing I can imagine is that last Sunday in his press conference here, he was asked about his hand, the one he had a problem with at the Laver Cup when he couldn’t play on the last day in Geneva.

“And he did sit there and say ‘don’t ask me about my hand’.”

Sam Smith said on Amazon Prime: “Rafa has pulled out. Everyone was really shocked here.

“We were looking at our watches and waiting for the walk on at 3.30 and when it didn’t happen everyone was looking at each other.

“Then Marc Maury came on the tannoy and said Rafa was injured in practise.”

No sign yet of the players. Play is due to begin.

The players are expected on court in around 15 minutes for their match.

That is after Novak Djokovic booked his spot in the final after beating Grigor Dimitrov 7-6 6-4.
