A CAGED abandoned puppy was within minutes of a freezing and agonising death, when it was miraculously saved by a kindly fisherman.
The black and white puppy had been locked in a cage, before being dumped and left to die in Kaufman Lake near Champaign in Illinois, US. The puppy was spotted by Bryant Fritz, a science teacher, who was on a fishing trip. Mr Fritz waded into the lake to rescue the stricken and helpless dog.
He said: “I am a big dog lover, I have a dog at home.
“I just saw an animal in need, and I just figured that by the time that somebody else got her it would be too late.”
He added: “It was pretty clear when I got the dog out that it had been there for several hours.”
The dog had been clearly maltreated and tortured by its owner, suffering numerous cuts to its body.
The science teacher explained: “When I got her up to the shore, there was blood all over the place.
“She was missing a bunch of fur on the back side, and the bottom of her paws were missing skin.
“She probably weighed 15 to 20 pounds; she was definitely a puppy. She was shaking so bad.
“Her eyes were shut. She was so miserable. I took her to my truck and turned up the heat as high as I could.”
The little dog was taken to the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital for treatment, suffering from hypothermia and and shock.
Chris Beuoy, a spokesperson for the vets, said: “We weren’t sure if the dog would need additional care for her wounds.
“But she received more treatment for her wounds on Sunday.”
The team caring for the dog posted an update about her condition on Facebook.
Dr. Jenica Harashak, a specialist in emergency and critical care who was at the hospital yesterday when the pup arrived, said: “She is doing well!
“The team has been busy taking care of her today.
“She got a bath and her wounds are being treated.
“She is a sweetheart and has been receiving lots of love and attention.
“Thank you to all of the people that have reached out and offered to help.”
The local police department appealed to the public on Facebook for help in tracing the person who dumped the puppy in the lake.
In a Facebook statement the Urbana Police Department wrote: “Update! The pup is doing well and will hopefully be adopted by the man that rescued her.
“We are still hoping to find the person that dumped her in the lake.
“Please share so he or she can be found.”
