Mothercare refunds: Mothercare says returns not accepted as online orders to be delayed

MOTHERCARE entered administration on Tuesday and now customers are being warned of delays to orders and returns no longer being accepted.

Mothercare will close all 79 of its British stores after going into administration this week, with at least 2,500 people losing their jobs.  The baby products retailer has 1,010 overseas franchise stores but has buckled under the pressures, price rises and online competition the UK high street is under. 

Mothercare Chairman Clive Whiley said: “The UK high street is facing a near existential problem with intensifying and compounding pressures across numerous fronts.”

Mothercare has been a prominent high-street fixture since 1961 but now joins Jamie’s Italian, Links of London and hairdressing chain Supercuts in closing its doors this year. 

Several other high street retailers have struggled in 2019, with many axing shops. 

Debenhams closed 22 of its 50 stores this year, Marks and Spencer shut 35 shops and dozens of Monsoon and Accessorize units were axed. 

Now Mothercare is launching a closing down sale for customers, with administrators PricewaterhouseCooper (PwC) saying customers can expect to find a “huge range of discounts and bargains as all stock must go before stores are closed for the final time”.

There is no current date in place for closures but stores are expected to shut their doors for a final time once all stock has been sold.

A spokesman for Mothercare said: “This is a great opportunity for customers to pick up some amazing deals as everything is reduced.

“Demand will be high so don’t wait to grab a fantastic deal, especially if you’re Christmas shopping.

“We’d also like to thank our customers for their historic support of the Mothercare brand.”

Can you still shop online?

Some online customers may be facing some issues when trying to shop. 

The website is operating as normal and orders made are processing but customers may experience delays. 

Online transactions are currently being delivered as normal, however, this may soon change. 

A spokesman for PwC said the website is still trading and orders are being accepted while stock levels are reviewed. 

In terms of gift cards, vouchers for the store are accepted but only if they originate from Mothercare. 

Any third party vouchers such as Love to Shop cards will no longer be accepted. 

Is Mothercare accepting returns?

As of Thursday, November 7, standard returns are no longer being accepted by Mothercare. 

A comment from administrators read: “The joint administrators are currently reviewing the returns policy. 

“As of today, statutory returns policy only applies.”

Statutory rights are the minimum guaranteed rights attributed to customers under law, so they always apply and overrule the retailer’s store policy. 

Under the law, if an item is faulty, doesn’t do what it is supposed to or is not as described customers are entitled to a refund. 

Any other refunds are done so under the retailer’s discretion and store policy. 

So this means Mothercare will no longer accept returns for items which are outside of the legal obligations.
