Billy Joe Saunders defends his WBO super middleweight world title against Marcelo Esteban Coceres on the KSI vs Logan Paul 2 undercard.
Eddie Hearn is hoping that Billy Joe Saunders will expand his fanbase through fighting on the KSI vs Logan Paul 2 undercard tonight.
Saunders faces Marcelo Esteban Coceres in one of the standout fights aside from the main event at Staples Center, Los Angeles.
Hardcore boxing fans have criticised the event which sees world champions such as Saunders and lightweight star Devin Haney feature under YouTubers-turned-pro boxers KSI and Logan Paul.
Saunders kept an open mind about the event, though, which is breaking online streaming and viewing figures and is expected to clock around 1.5million pay-per-view buys worldwide.
Hearn hopes a portion of those fans, most of whom will be new to the boxing world, convert into Saunders supporters after likely seeing the Englishman defend his 168lb belt.
“We are going to try and piggyback off the back of that audience to increase the profile of Billy Joe Saunders and Devin Haney,” Hearn told talkSPORT.
“This is Billy Joe Saunders’ first fight in America and if it was him on his own then you might have a hundredth of the audience you are going to get for this fight.
“He understands it, he gets it. It’s a really important fight for him as it is his first attempt at defending is super-middleweight world title.”
After Saunders makes his bow in the States he may well go on to headline his own show against the Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, who became a three-weight world champion last weekend against Sergey Kovalev.
“Canelo and his team have earmarked Billy Joe as a candidate for the Cinco de Mayo date,” Hearn revealed.
“He needs to look good and make a statement on his US debut. He’s in good form and is taking on an unbeaten Marcelo Coceres.
“It’s going to be a tough fight but I believe Billy Joe is a top pound-for-pound fighter and I really believe he is going to get that Canelo fight next year.”
