A LIBERAL DEMOCRAT election candidate has become embroiled in an extraordinary row on social media after complaining the January 31 Brexit extension could ruin her ski holiday.
Beatrice Bass, who is fighting the Hove and Portslade seat for Jo Swinson’s party, was roundly condemned for her comments but appeared unrepentant. She tweeted: “Hang on, this extension of the Brexit deadline until 31 January 2020 will better not ruin my ski season. December and January are for winter sports not campaigning. Not to mention that World Economic Forum is in January as well. I am not amused.”
Twitter user Alfie Thomlinson replied: “Lucky for some eh!? Not sure many Brexit voting Northerners can relate.”
But he was given short-shrift by Ms Bass, who describes herself as a passionate campaigner to remain in the EU, helps organise the monthly EU street stalls in Brighton and is a regular participant at national anti-Brexit marches.
She fired back: “B******t – we’re still in the EU. Even your Brexit voting Northeners can work there.
“A carpenter/plumber gets an hourly rate of €60-€90 in Germany, builders similar, electricians more.
“Working in catering in Swiss ski resort earns you min wage of £3,500 per month.
“And I know many small business owners in Brighton who are not millionaires but go on ski trips every year, mostly to France.
“If anything, Brexit will increase their business overheads and instead of expanding, they’ll have a hard time. Stop moaning, get real.”
Stunned voters reacted with incredulity.
Alastair Walker tweeted: “Wow, just WOW. And they wonder why so many poilticians get labelled as ‘self-serving’!”
Angus Allan replied: “Good to see @LibDems adopting the common touch in their choice of candidates.
“Democracy is so inconvenient. Must be why they want to #StopBrexit Wish I had the spare time & money to go skiing for two months. Oh well back to the day job.”
Bella34 tweeted: “Wow! Not exactly a woman of the people. Not many of us can a) afford to ski, or b) take that much time off work.
“I think you should be in the Tory party if skiing is your priority.”
And Paul Wesson posted: “It doesn’t matter does it Beatrice? You’re a paper candidate.
“The last Lib Dem in Hove & Portslade lost their deposit as you will lose yours. Enjoy the skiing, nobody in Hove will notice you’re gone.”
Ms Bass, a Swiss British national who grew up in Davos, Switzerland, is up against Labour incumbent Peter Kyle who has a majority of 18,757, Tory candidate Robert Nemeth, Andy Wood from the Brexit Party and Ollie Sykes from the Greens.
She said: “Boris Johnson’s Brexit would be a disaster for Hove and Portslade.
“It will result in further staffing shortages for our NHS and our vibrant hospitality sector, and have major implications for businesses who would no longer be able to provide their services, or exchange data in the EU without access restrictions – a huge blow for our IT and financial sector, research and the creative industries.
“Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour cannot be trusted on Brexit. They now say that they want to negotiate their own Brexit deal, causing further delays and uncertainty.
“The Liberal Democrats are the only party committed to revoke Article 50 and stop Brexit.”
