Game of Thrones plot hole: Melisandre’s disappearance from show explained?

GAME OF THRONES might have ended months ago but that hasn’t stopped fans from theorising over every scene and outcome. One thing that has puzzled them is the disappearance of Melisandre in the middle of the season, but there may have been a simple explanation as to where she went.

Game of Thrones may no longer be on screens but the HBO show is still alive and well on Reddit. Most recently, talk has turned to Melisandre (played by Carice Van Houten) and where she went when the gap between seasons seven and eight.

In season seven, Melisandre went to Volantis, and Reddit user arthasmenethil0 has questioned why.

The forum poster wrote: “In season see, she said she has important business in Volantis, but she will return to Westeros because she was destined to die there.

“I know they pretty much scrapped this, but what do you think they intended with that scene?

Fans have been pretty stumped by the plot hole, which was never explained by the time Melisandre returned in season eight.

Nevertheless, viewers have been attempting to work out just what happened.

I_Hate_Nerds theorised: “The main Temple of the lord of Light is in Volantis along with the High Priest of their order.

“One could assume she went back to confer with him on all she’s learned, learned some higher magic and then returned levelled up for the final battle.”

StarkLord89 agreed, suggesting: “Well first of all she ‘would be a distraction’ to Davos and Jon.

“I think she went to Volantis to gather strength and train for the battle at Winterfell.”

Melisandre returned in season eight for the Battle of Winterfell, and used her powers to wage a war.

She lit everyone’s torches ready for the right and thrust her men into combat against the White Walkers.

However, her efforts didn’t help to win the war, but they were undoubtedly important.

She died soon after as she turned to dust.

Meanwhile, it seems a hidden detail behind Daenerys Targaryen’s (Emilia Clarke) downfall has been revealed.

In the show’s art book, when Daenerys is about to destroy King’s Landing, she notices a Lannister vigil behind the Iron Throne.

According to this, it was the mere sight of the enemy sign that caused the Mother of Dragons to lose her temper.

DB Weiss spoke about the pivotal scene, saying: “She sees the Red Keep, which is, to her, the home that her family built when they first came over to this country 300 years ago.

“It’s in that moment, on the walls of King’s Landing, when she’s looking at that symbol of everything that was taken from her, when she makes the decision to make this personal.”

Daenerys would go on to destroy King’s Landing, burning thousands of innocent residents to a crisp.

As a result, Jon Snow (Kit Harington) would kill her.
