AN IRANIAN oil tanker which was seized by Royal Marines off the coast off Gibraltar in July is to be released.
The ruling that the Grace 1 should be released follows written assurances from Iran that the vessel will not dispose of its cargo in Syria, which would be a breach of EU sanctions.
British tanker Stena Impero seized by Iran
The decision was issued at Gibraltar’s local supreme court, and goes against the wishes of the US.
Relations between the US and Iran have deteriorated sharply since US President Donald Trump took office in 2017.
The tanker has been at the centre of a tit-for-tat dispute between Iran and western powers.
On July 19, Iran seized a British-flagged tanker, the Stena Impero, in the Gulf of Hormuz. The vessel and its crew are still being held.
‘We should release Iran’s tanker for ours’
There has been speculation that the Stena Impero was captured to force the UK to release the Grace 1 by way of a trade, although the UK authorities have denied that they would cooperate in such a deal.
