England fans took to Twitter to vent their anger, voice their frustration and poke fun at the team after Joe Root’s men were embarrassingly out for 85 against Ireland.
Having won the World Cup 10 days ago at Lord’s, the positive feeling evaporated on the same ground as England’s batting line up capitulated.
The official Ireland Cricket Twitter account posted a historic tweet from Jofra Archer, after his old, seemingly prophetic words were used by fans during the World Cup.
The fast bowler had written: ‘Ireland looking good :(‘, back in February 2015. And the Irish quote tweeted it with a smiling face.
Many England supporters blamed the poor first inning performance on England’s one day stars partying too hard in the aftermath of their thrilling victory over New Zealand 10 days ago.
One wrote: ‘Still hungover, lads?’ Another added: ‘That’s what alcohol and staying up partying does for two solid weeks.
A number of fans used a gifs to illustrate the ridiculous first innings total.
One used Gary Neville saying: ‘I’m furious to be honest with you’, while another posted Chris Pratt rubbing his hands gleefully under the caption: ‘Mitchell Starc right now’.
And that pre-Ashes theme was repeated elsewhere with some taking the batting failure more seriously.
A particularly disgruntled follower wrote: ‘Heroes to zeroes in 23 and a bit overs. Not acceptable for the paying public and an embarrassment. Urgent rethink needed ahead of the Ashes.’
The first Test against Australia begins on August 1 and Root’s side will hope they can salvage some pride at Lord’s before they go about trying to win back the urn.
