Algeria distanced themselves from suggestions that medication taken by Riyad Mahrez on their watch led to fears the Manchester City star could fall foul of doping rules.
Pep Guardiola revealed that Mahrez missed Sunday’s Community Shield because club doctors were uncertain whether medicine ingested would contravene UKAD’s regulations.
Sportsmail understands Mahrez had a private procedure on his nose in the days before re-joining City following Algeria’s Africa Cup of Nations triumph on July 19.
City, who declined to comment, remain unsure whether the winger will be available for selection against West Ham on Saturday. Both the FA and UKAD offered no comment on Wednesday night.
Mahrez only linked up with City last Friday and needs time to return to full fitness. Algeria insisted on Wednesday that the issue is nothing to do with their medical team.
‘This is a non-event from the moment the player took the medications after the Africa Cup of Nations,’ the Algerian Football Federation said. ‘It is a problem for Manchester City.’
