PewDiePie has opened up about overcoming a drinking problem in the past, revealing that it was ‘actually kind of scary.’

The YouTube star, who’s inching towards the 100 million subscriber mark after a battle with record label T-Series, opened up about his relationship with alcohol.

Chatting on the Cold Ones podcast, the hosts pointed out that the lyrics of the star’s song Congratulations include the lines: ‘Just here to pop some bottles with the 9-Year-Old Army/ Non-alcoholic ’cause I had a real problem.’

‘It’s kind of cringey to talk about. I read this book on Buddhism and it spoke about self-control and being in control of your body and not just being an empty vessel,’ the 29-year-old explained.

‘I used to have this habit of drinking whiskey a little bit. Just a little bit! I realised how f***ing hard it was to stop that habit.’

Pewds – real name Felix Kjellberg – revealed: ‘It was actually kind of scary. I was like, “Oh f***.” And then I stopped drinking for half a year.’

Speaking about the reasons behind his drinking habit, Felix added: ‘The reason I started drinking whiskey was because I was always working, like constantly.

‘I never felt like I had a period where I could  chill at the end of the day…I was always so worked up and it was a lot of hard work so I was like, “Oh, I’ll just have a drink at the end of the day.”‘

He pointed out that finding other outlets to deal with stress, including working out, helped him to cut down on the alcohol.

The Swedish YouTuber has recently been opening up a conversation about mental health, putting on a charity live stream with Jack Black in honour of fellow gamer Etika, who tragically died back in late June.

Donating $10,000 (£8000) to the cause, Felix also raised $30,000 (£24,000) for the National Alliance on Mental Health.

Sharing a photo of his donation, the star simply wrote: ‘For Etika.’
