Trentin wins Stage 17 as Tour leaders save energy

Matteo Trentin won stage 17 of the Tour de France as the leaders tried to save their energy and keep pace with each other on Wednesday.

The Italian traveled the hilly, 200-kilometer (124-mile) course from Pont du Gard to Gap in 4:21.36, while Kasper Asgreen of Denmark was second, 37 seconds behind. The overall race leaders were about 20 minutes behind Trentin.

Frenchman Julian Alaphilippe retained the yellow jersey, and there were no changes in the overall standings. He leads defending champion Geraint Thomas of Great Britain by 95 seconds and Steven Kruijswijk of the Netherlands by one minute, 47 seconds.

Alaphilippe rode Wednesday in a pack with Thomas and Kruijswijk, saving their legs for Thursday’s Stage 18, a 208-kilometer (129-mile) challenge from Embrun to Valloire on the mountainous trek into the Alps.

It was a third career Tour stage win for Trentin and first since 2014.
