TOTTENHAM TEAM NEWS – Mauricio Pochettino’s men face off against Premier League champions Manchester City at the weekend and Express Sport has the latest on who might start.
Tottenham Hotspur got their season off to a winning start last weekend with a 3-1 win over Premier League new boys Aston Villa.
All three of Tottenham’s goals came in the last twenty minutes after John McGinn gave Villa an early lead.
Debutant Tanguy Ndombele equalised for his new club before a quick fire double from Harry Kane secured all three points.
However, despite coming from behind to get their first victory of the new season, Mauricio Pochettino may well make changes for their highly anticipated clash with Manchester City.
Ben Davies is not yet fully recovered from groin surgery meaning Danny Rose will once again start for Spurs at left-back.
Fellow defenders Serge Aurier and Juan Foyth are also out of the game through injury, with Aurier recovering from a hand injury sustained at the Africa Cup of Nations and Foyth out of action until September with an ankle problem.
This means youngster Kyle Walker-Peters will retain his spot at right-back.
Jan Vertonghen was left out of the side to face Villa in favour of Toby Alderweireld and Davinson Sanchez and Pochettino may well decide to do the same against City.
When asked about Vertonghen’s omission, Pochettino said: “With all the players fit you struggle to find a starting eleven.
“This is my sixth season, I think everyone knows me. I am going to play the players who I believe deserve to play.
“There is not any issue [with Vertonghen], only my decision was to play with Toby [Alderweireld] and Davinson [Sanchez].
“We have more than 25 players and everyone needs to understand we have plenty of good players in every position.”
Christian Eriksen may well return to Tottenham’s starting lineup amid uncertainty about his long term future in north London.
The Denmark international made an appearance off the bench against Villa and helped inspire Spurs’ comeback.
His importance to that win means Pochettino cannot afford to leave him out of this clash against the Premier League champions and Erik Lamela will likely drop to the bench to accommodate him.
