THE ONE SHOW welcomed Stanley Johnson on to the show today to discuss his son, Boris Johnson, after he was made Prime Minister earlier today. However, it seemed his father missed his big moment and it was something Matt Baker couldn’t resist calling out the father.
The One Show commemorated Boris Johnson’s new role as Prime Minister by speaking to his dad, Stanley Johnson.
The father was positively beaming to see his boy take centre stage, however, he revealed he was actually busy when he made his first speech as PM.
Matt Baker and Angelica Bell spoke about the new leader of the country, saying to their guest: “Stanley, thank you for joining us for your first TV interview since he became Prime Minister.”
However, Stanley admitted he was actually at lunch when Boris took to the podium at 10 Downing Street.
Matt wasn’t massively impressed by what he heard and he told Stanley: “The biggest moment of your son’s life and you were in a restaurant?”
However, Stanley and Angelica laughed off the swipe and got on with the rest of the interview.
Stanley thought his boy did a good job in the speech, telling Matt and Angela it was “fantastic”.
He added: “You talk about optimism and that’s what we jolly-well need.”
The proud father went on to deliver his verdict on how Boris will cope with Brexit.
He said: “Brexit is going to happen. He said, ‘No ifs and buts’.
“Our new Foreign Secretary… it’s Dominic Raab now isn’t it? He is going to send his team of diplomats and he’s going to get them in the EU.
“They can tell them they’ve got to negotiate. Blood will be on their hands, not ours.”
Viewers weren’t as sold on Boris’s speech and the amount of coverage the new Prime Minister was getting at all.
One tweeted: “What is this Tory love fest on the one show its actually sickening.”
Another shared: “Boris Johnson’s dad sickeningly extolling Boris’s ‘virtues’ on #TheOneShow. YUK!”
A third commented: “FFS @bbc. Boris Johnsons dad? On #TheOneShow That sound is one of… barrels being scraped and arses kicked. How did we get to this point?”
A fourth came out in praise of tonight’s episode, adding: “#StanleyJohnson for PM. #TheOneShow such a nice man.”
“Great show tonight loved Stanley in the jungle and Jason Watkins is a great actor #TheOneShow,” said a fifth.
Meanwhile Boris is in the process of choosing his cabinet and it seems it hasn’t taken him long to really switch things up.
The biggest shocks have come from the biggest jobs in government as Sajid Javid has replaced Phillip Hammond as Chancellor.
Dominic Raab has been confirmed as the new Foreign Secretary, and he will take over from Jeremy Hunt.
Prat Patel has replaced Javid as Home Secretary, while political commentators eagerly await the rest of the announcements.
