EWAN MCGREGOR is returning to Star Wars as Obi-Wan Kenobi, according to sources. But will it be for a movie or Disney Plus series?
Since Disney purchased the rights to Lucasfilm at the beginning of the decade, fans have been calling for Ewan McGregor to return as Obi-Wan Kenobi. So far there’s been two Star Wars spin-off movies in Rogue One and Solo, but no confirmation of the Jedi’s comeback. Nevertheless, McGregor himself has repeatedly said in interviews he would definitely do it if asked. And now it sounds like it’s all going ahead.
Cinelinx say two separate Star Wars sources confirm McGregor has signed a contract to return as Obi-Wan Kenobi.
But will it be in the rumoured solo movie or a TV series as part of the new Disney Plus streaming service?
Well, the outlet says they’ve heard the latter, which makes a lot of sense considering the box office flop that was Solo: A Star Wars Story.
Perhaps an Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney Plus series would be limited and one-off, like the planned Marvel ones also on the service.
It’s been 14 years since McGregor last played Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.
This means he’ll have aged perfectly for a return set between that film and Episode IV: A New Hope, which saw an older Obi-Wan played by Sir Alec Guinness.
Meanwhile, it’s possible McGregor could play the Jedi in this Christmas’ Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker as a Force ghost.
After all, Frank Oz returned as Yoda in The Last Jedi, plus there’s proof in an official new Star Wars book that Anakin and Obi-Wan’s Force ghosts are still around.
The tease is found in a preview of Star Wars: The Secrets of the Jedi by Marc Sumerak.
The new book, released in November, chronicles the history of the Jedi Order and is written from Luke Skywalker’s perspective.
One section reads: “That knowledge was then passed down to a select few, including Obi-Wan, Yoda and my father.
“Their spirits guided me for many years but vanished when I shut myself off from the Force. It’s a relief to feel their presence again after all this time.”
