THE QUEEN met Boris Johnson today as he became Prime Minister – but royal fans were distracted by Her Majesty’s handbag.
The Queen welcomed the new Tory leader for an audience at Buckingham Palace this afternoon. However royal fans took to social media to question why the monarch was carrying her handbag inside her royal residence.
One tweeted: “Good. But why the Queen carries a handbag even to her living room?”
Another said: “Does the queen really need a purse?”
A third wrote: “Always with that handbag! Even in her own home!!!!”
Another posted: “Love that the queen is carrying a handbag while greeting the new pm like she’s popping out right after.”
One more said: “Why does the queen hold her handbag in her own house? Like put it down on the sofa init!!? Or hang it on the kitchen door like I do.”
The Queen is rarely seen in public without her trusty black leather handbag.
And she was also carrying it when Theresa May took the top job back in 2016.
Mr Johnson was appointed Prime Minister following Mrs May’s resignation earlier today.
In a statement Buckingham Palace said: “The Queen received in Audience The Right Honourable Boris Johnson MP this afternoon and requested him to form a new Administration.
“Mr Johnson accepted Her Majesty’s offer and kissed hands upon his appointment as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury.”
Following his meeting with the Queen, Mr Johnson delivered a rousing speech outside 10 Downing Street.
He said: “I pay tribute to the fortitude and patience of my predecessor and her deep sense of public service, but in spite of all her efforts, it has become clear that there are pessimists at home and abroad who think after three years of indecision that this country has become a prisoner to the old arguments of 2016 and in this home of democracy we are incapable of honouring a democratic mandate.
“And so I am standing before you today, to tell you the British people, that those critics are wrong – the doubters, the doomsters, the gloomsters are going to get it wrong again.”
