It’s hard to believe that we’ve only been living our best Hot Girl Summer lives for just one summer since Megan Thee Stallion popularised the term earlier this year.
But if you’re already sick of seeing #HotGirlSummer pasted all over your Instagram feed, it looks like you’ll just have to deal with it a little longer, as there’s now a song from the rapper themed around the phrase.
Nicki Minaj and Megan have teamed up for a song of the same name, alongside Ty Dolla $ign, so you’ve also now got a soundtrack to live out your best Hot Girl Summer life to.
Nicki may have a long-standing rivalry with Cardi B, but Megan admitted she was thrilled to team up with Nick for the track despite her friendship with Cardi.
‘[Fans] really make it seem like you’re “picking sides”,’ she explained in an interview with E! News.
‘I really, really, really like both of them. They’re two different people, two different rappers. It’s not even the same.
‘I feel like we need to stop trying to compare them. I love both of them, so I would definitely like to collab with Cardi too.’
For the uninitiated, a Hot Girl Summer is basically the summery version of BDE.
It’s not actually about being ‘hot’, but more like a state of mind. Think of it like a gender-neutral term that can be applied to anyone who is just basically living their best life.
‘It’s just basically about women — and men — just being unapologetically them, just having a good-ass time, hyping up your friends, doing you, not giving a damn about what nobody got to say about it,’ Megan explained in an interview with The Root.
‘You definitely have to be a person that can be the life of the party, and, y’know, just a bad b*tch.’
Ever since the trend became popularised on social media, it’s been picked up by celebrities and normal people alike the world over, with Miley Cyrus, Lizzo, Jada Pinkett Smith and others posting their own #HotGirlSummer pics to Instagram.
And it doesn’t look like it’s going away any time soon. Megan recently revealed she was in the process of trademarking the phrase.
According to Billboard, the 24-year-old rapper reportedly filed the trademark papers on 10 July, the day after telling a fan who asked if she was planning to trademark the phrase: ‘Yes mam it’s been in the process’.
If successful, Megan will be able to use the term on merchandise such as t-shirts, hoodies and sportswear. A #HotGirlSummer indeed.
