Missing man’s body pulled out of River Thames after ‘going for a swim’

The body of a man who disappeared after it is believed he went swimming in the River Thames has been found.

Police said they recovered the body from the water on Thursday night near Canary Wharf, in the capital.

Officers believe the person can be identified as Menelik Mimano and his family have been informed.

However, formal identification is yet to take place and a report will be prepared for HM’s coroner.

The victim had been reported missing after a man was spotted swimming in the capital’s river near Waterloo Bridge on Tuesday.

Eyewitnesses said they saw a person having difficulty in the water at around 8.30pm before calling police to the scene.

Officers and the Marine Policing Unit conducted searches of the water and surrounding area but with no trace.

At 21.20pm last night police received reports of sightings of a body and it was later recovered from the water.

His death is not being treated as suspicious.

As Mr Mimano had been been the subject of a missing person enquiry, the Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards has been informed.
