Lochte to make competitive return after 14-month suspension

WASHINGTON, July 26 (Xinhua) — Following a 14-month doping ban, six-time Olympic gold medalist Ryan Lochte is set to return to competition at the 2019 American national championships in Palo Alto, California next week, USA Swimming announced Thursday.

Lochte signed up for six events at the five-day meet from July 31 to August 4, starting with a 100m freestyle on Wednesday.

Earlier last year, the 34-year-old American athlete received a doping investigation by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency and later a 14-month ban for the excessive level of prohibited intravenous infusion. The ban took effect on May 24, 2018, and subsequently expired this week.

Lochte served his first suspension in 2016 after his claim to have been robbed by armed men during the Rio Olympics was proved to be “over-exaggerated.”

Lochte, a mainstay in the American national team, is the second-most decorated swimmer in Olympic history, winning a total of six golds, three silvers, and three bronze medals since he debuted at the Olympics at Athens 2004.
