Jurgen Klopp makes promise to Liverpool starlet Rhian Brewster ahead of new season

Jurgen Klopp has ‘promised’ Rhian Brewster he will have an important first team role to play this season.

The 19-year-old has recovered from the serious knee and ankle injuries that had curtailed his progress over the course of the past 12 months and has made a striking impression during Liverpool’s pre-season campaign.

Brewster has taken the opportunity to shine in the absence of Liverpool’s stellar front three, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah, all of whom have been given extended breaks following their international commitments this summer.

Liverpool have been ultra conservative in the transfer market this summer by their recent standards with Klopp steadfastly refusing to entertain the prospect of bringing back Philippe Coutinho from Barcelona despite his apparent availability.

The Champions League holders maintain an interest in Lille’s Nicolas Pepe, but Brewster’s emergence has played a part in Klopp’s decision not to sign direct replacements for Daniel Sturridge and Dominic Solanke who joined Bournemouth on a permanent basis in January.

‘I love the boy, he is fantastic player. Why should I play it down?’ said Klopp.

‘Rhian Brewster is a top striker, he is a top talent and I have told him already that he has an important role this year – but how important depends on him.’

The 19-year-old has scored three times during pre-season already and is in line to feature in the upcoming matches against Napoli and Lyon ahead of the Premier League curtain raiser against Norwich on August 9.
