DEATH IN PARADISE is currently led by Ardal O’Hanlon’s DI Jack Mooney after he took over from DI Humphrey Goodman, played by Kris Marshall. However, before both O’Hanlon and Marshall was Ben Miller as DI Richard Poole and the star spoke out about his reaction to his Death in Paradise replacement.
Death in Paradise has been a huge hit on BBC One ever since the series debuted in 2011. Season one, episode one premiered with DI Richard Poole (played by Ben Miller) leading the way but by the beginning of the third series, DI Humphrey Goodman (Kris Marshall) was brought in to front the show. Express.co.uk heard from Miller following his exit and discovered how he felt about being replaced by Marshall.
How did Ben Miller feel about Death in Paradise replacement Kris Marshall?
Ben Miller’s final appearance on Death in Paradise came in the season three premiere, Death of a Detective.
Kris Marshall took over from Miller in the same episode of the BBC One series.
Miller exclusively said in 2016 he felt “left out” during filming, describing the feeling as “poignant”.
The former Death in Paradise frontman explained: “I remember walking along the boardwalk on the side of where they were filming, Kris Marshall and Sarah Martins, who play the main characters, doing what we call a walk and talk,
“I felt so left out, I can’t believe that’s not me anymore and it felt like a real moment actually.”
Miller also exclusively revealed in 2014 he made the decision to leave Death in Paradise because of his family.
“I had just begun work on the first series of Death In Paradise when my wife Jessica discovered she was pregnant,” Miller began.
The actor continued: “Our son, Harrison, was born just after I finished filming, but when I went back out for the second series, I didn’t see much of him at all.
“It was hard, and I just didn’t feel like I could do that again.
“My elder son, [seven-year-old] Sonny, was at nursery at the time, but now he’s started school so he couldn’t come out either.
“It just wasn’t going to work. That said, I’m very sorry to be leaving.”
Marshall took on the lead role in Death in Paradise up until season six.
His character DI Humphrey Goodman departed the series in season six, episode six to be replaced by O’Hanlon’s DI Jack Rooney.
O’Hanlon’s become a fan favourite in the role and will return for the ninth season next year.
When exactly BBC One will release the series nine premiere remains to be seen.
