Brazil’s president says ‘poop every other day’ to protect the planet

Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro has told people to poo less to save the environment.

He made the remarks as he lashed out at critics who blame him for an an increase in deforestation in Brazil.

After a journalist asked the president of if he knew how to save the planet, grow the economy and feed the population at the same time, Bolsonaro retorted with an unusual suggestion.

He said: ‘It’s enough to eat a little less. You talk about environmental pollution. It’s enough to poop every other day. That will be better for the whole world.’

The journalist had challenged Bolsonaro, 64, with reports saying deforestation and agriculture were responsible for a significant proportion of climate change.

Bolsonaro has been under pressure after figures from the Brazilian National Institute for Space Research (INPE) revealed the cutting down of the Amazonian rainforest skyrocketed by nearly 300 per cent in the past year.

Bolsonaro sacked the INPE’s head said the data was misleadingly framed to look sensationalist.

Brazil’s environment minister Ricardo Salles said the government has a plan to combat deforestation which he reveal details of next month.

Under Mr Bolosnaro’s government, there has been a dramatic fall in timber confiscations and convictions for environmental crimes.
