Report: FARC heavily involved in the international drug trade

11/03/2010

BOGOTÁ, Colombia – The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) use Venezuela, Panama and the Pacific Ocean to smuggle cocaine into the United States, according to a report in the Bogotá newspaper El Tiempo, which quoted anonymous U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration sources. The allegations stem from information on a computer that belonged to Edgar Tovar, who commanded the FARC’s 48th front before he recently was killed by the Colombian army during a raid. The computer contained detailed information on shipping routes, in addition to lists of the terrorist group’s allies in the drug trafficking business. The FARC’s drug business ran much like the one used by the Italian mob,” said Gen. Óscar Naranjo, the director of the Colombian national police.
