Karol Cabrera, a Honduran journalist, granted asylum in Canada

TORONTO, Canada – Honduran journalist Karol Cabrera and her two children are in Canada after the nation granted them asylum, her attorney, Angélica González-Blanco, said. Cabrera survived an assassination attempt in the Central American nation on March 1 that claimed the life of her colleague, Joseph Ochoa, when their vehicle was shot 36 times by unknown gunmen. Kathleen Nicolle Rodríguez Cabrera, Cabrera’s 16-year-old pregnant daughter, was murdered in Tegucigalpa in a similar assault in December 2009, González-Blanco said. Karol Cabrera arrived in Toronto on June 10 with her 3-year-old son and was joined shortly after by her 14-year-old daughter, Andrea Carolina Rodríguez Cabrera.
