SANTIAGO, Chile – Insurance companies have paid US$640 million in claims to owners of 105,694 residences that were damaged by the massive earthquake that rocked Chile on Feb. 27, insurance regulators said. Insurers had received 190,199 claims for damaged residences as of the end of last month, the Securities and Insurance Commission (SVS) said. SVS said 186,539 of the claims have been reviewed and companies have paid on 156,242 of them. “The SVS is especially focused on ensuring that the insured are informed of the status of their claims and on corresponding payments being made,” SVS Chief Fernando Coloma said.
